Death by Database
We’ve seen just about every flavor of “database” you can imagine in oil and gas—some of them real, most of them… not. Folks in search of scalable, sharable, secure data storage often employ half-measures on their way towards true databases and data warehouses. Are you using datbases that aren't actually databases?
Pretty big one this month, featuring improvements to parameters, sparklines, paginated reports, easier use of the Azure Maps visual, and a better PostgreSQL connector. Plus, org apps are now available on mobile devices and Power Query Editor improves its web version. Okay maybe that was a really big one.
Spotfire 14.5
We discussed this last month, but it's in the wild. This is a pretty big release in our view, definitely worth taking a look at. Note that 14.6 is planned as a Long-Term Support release in the fall, so get your feedback in ASAP.
Databricks and Snowflake both invest in PostgreSQL
SQL is dead, long live SQL! In the span of just a few days, Databricks bought Neon and Snowflake bought Crunchy Labs, both startups focused on cloud-native open-source Postgres databases. Databricks and Snowflake continue to trade punches to be a long-term platform for data storage, ETL, warehousing, cataloging, and more. Postgres continues to gain momentum with tools like vector databases, TimescaleDB, and PostGIS - it seems to have a chance to become the defacto standard for open-source back-ends.
